  Following is a more complete description of each of the Classifications.
 
 
Name Description
ALARM SYSTEMS  Installation, renovation, repair and maintenance of low voltage fire protection, security and other types of alarm systems.  
ASBESTOS REMOVAL  The removal and disposal of asbestos previously incorporated into a building, which may include encapsulation. To prequalify for Asbestos Removal, you must have an Asbestos Contractor License through the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health. 
CARPENTRY/MILLWORK  This classification includes:
Carpentry: the cutting, framing and joining pieces of timber in the construction of wood structures.

Millwork: the manufacture and installation of generally all building materials made of finished wood and/or plastic and manufactured in millwork plants and in planing mills, such as doors, window and door frames, sash, blinds, porch work, mantels, panel work, stairways and special woodwork. Does not include flooring, ceilings or siding. 
CONCRETE  Installation, renovation, repair and maintenance of cast in place concrete structures including foundations and structural concrete components including such incidental or related work as is customarily performed by those in the concrete trade. 
CONCRETE: PRECAST STRUCTURAL AND ARCHITECTURAL  Design, factory manufacture and field install precast concrete structural and architectural components for total precast concrete building systems. The types of structures would include parking garages, multi-unit housing, stadiums, office buildings, commercial buildings, schools, nursing homes, bridges and other concrete precast products. 
CONSTRUCTION MANAGER AT RISK (GROUP A)  The undertaking of general contracts for the construction of buildings (i.e. new construction, renovation, rehabilitation, alteration, addition, etc.). The contract must include a variety of construction practices and supervision of a minimum of three sub-trades. Includes those designs that are repetitive, conventional in character, require minimum design based on pre-engineered systems/components, and that pose minimum effort by the design professional. Examples include repetitive designs, dormitories, warehouses, basic building structures without interior finishes, ceiling replacement, pre-engineered components, recreation facilities etc. .


The construction manager at risk serves as a general contractor and provides consultation regarding construction during the design of the building and through the construction. .

Note: Contractors in this classification are not required to be registered as a major contractor with the Department of Consumer Protection. However, there may be specific projects within this classification that require a major contractor registration from the Department of Consumer Protection. 
CONSTRUCTION MANAGER AT RISK (GROUP B)  The undertaking of general contracts for the construction of buildings (i.e. new construction, renovation, rehabilitation, alteration, addition, etc.). The contract must include a variety of construction practices and supervision of a minimum of three sub-trades. Includes most of the structures that normally house State functions. These all require normal mechanical/electrical systems for today's standards of operation for quality space, security and environmental comfort. Examples include office buildings, general classroom and administrative offices, college buildings, auditoriums, maintenance buildings.

The construction manager at risk serves as a general contractor and provides consultation regarding construction during the design of the building and through the construction.

Note: If you are prequalified for Construction Manager at Risk under Group B, you are automatically prequalified for Group A.

To prequalify for Construction Manager at Risk under Group B, you must have a Major Contractor Registration through the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. 
CONSTRUCTION MANAGER AT RISK (GROUP C)  The undertaking of general contracts for the construction of buildings (i.e. new construction, renovation, rehabilitation, alteration, addition, etc.). The contract must include a variety of construction practices and supervision of a minimum of three sub-trades. Includes buildings that are truly custom, requiring extensive detailing, or that have large amounts of integrated scientific or complex mechanical/electrical equipment in order for them to function. Examples include hospitals, chemistry buildings, special collections buildings, historic preservation to a landmark structure, and/or any other structure that is truly one of a kind within the State's inventory.
The construction manager at risk serves as a general contractor and provides consultation regarding construction during the design of the building and through the construction.

Note: If you are prequalified for Construction Manager at Risk under Group C, you are automatically prequalified for Group A and Group B.

To prequalify for Construction Manager at Risk under Group C, you must have a Major Contractor Registration through the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. 
DEMOLITION  Work customarily performed by a building wrecking contractor including the razing of buildings or parts of buildings major guttering of buildings or removal of structural elements of a building. The removal of partitions, flooring, windows, etc., incidental to a renovation or remodeling project is NOT within this category. .
To prequalify for Demolition, you must have a Demolition Contractor Certificate of Registration through the State of Connecticut Department of Public Safety. 
DOORS AND WINDOWS  Work customarily performed by this industry, including installation of doors and windows made of wood, metal or other materials, both interior and exterior. This category does NOT include glass and glazing by itself. 
DRYWALL AND ACOUSTICAL  Installation, renovation, repair and maintenance of drywall and/or acoustical systems composed of metal or wood studs, drywall, taping including such incidental or related work as is customarily performed by those in the drywall/acoustical trade. 
ELECTRICAL  Installation, renovation, repair and maintenance of electrical wiring, circuits, panel boards, fixtures and equipment, including, such incidental or related work as is customarily performed by those in the electrical trade.
To prequalify for Electrical you must have an Electrical Contractor License through the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. 
ELEVATORS  The installation, maintenance and repair of elevators, handicapped accessible chair lifts, moving stairs, or dumbwaiters within a building.
To prequalify for Elevators you must have an Elevator Contractor License through the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. 
ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS  The design and installation of systems or maintenance programs to conserve energy use within a building. This category includes shared savings programs. 
FIRE PROTECTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS  Installation, renovation, repairs and maintenance of fire protection sprinklers in buildings, including such incidental or related work as is customarily performed by those in the Fire Protection/Sprinkler System trades.
To prequalify for Fire Protection Sprinkler Systems you must have a Fire Protection Contractor License through the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. 
FIREPROOFING  A passive fire protection measure making materials or structures more resistant to fire. Including materials or their assemblies that prevent or retard the passage of excessive heat, hot gases, flames, or the act of applying such materials.  
FLOOR COVERING  The installation of carpeting, resilient floor coverings, hardwood flooring, all types of tile installed as finished flooring and other floor covering materials. 
GENERAL BUILDING CONSTRUCTION (GROUP A)  The undertaking of general contracts for the construction of buildings (i.e. new construction, renovation, rehabilitation, alteration, addition, etc.). The contract must include a variety of construction practices and supervision of a minimum of three sub-trades. The contract must include a variety of construction practices and supervision of a minimum of three sub-trades. Includes buildings that are truly custom, requiring extensive detailing, or that have large amounts of integrated scientific or complex mechanical/electrical equipment in order for them to function. Examples include hospitals, chemistry buildings, special collections buildings, historic preservation to a landmark structure, and/or any other structure that is truly one of a kind within the State's inventory.
Note: If you are prequalified for General Building Construction under Group C, you are automatically prequalified for Group A and Group B.
To prequalify for General Building Construction under Group C, you must have a Major Contractor Registration through the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. 
GENERAL TRADES  The undertaking of general contracts for the construction and/or supervision of several sub-trades but not the construction of buildings as described in General Building Construction. The contract must include a variety of construction practices and supervision of a minimum of three sub-trades. The work of this category is intended for the interior finishes of a building. 
HISTORICAL BUILDING RESTORATION (MASONRY, ROOFING)  Construction/renovation, masonry, and roofing work will require firms with experience with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation issued by the U.S. Department of Interior, National Park Service, Washington, D.C. (Standards for Treatment of Historic Project.) 
HVAC  Installation, renovation, repair and maintenance of the systems and apparatus required, collectively or individually, to provide comfort heating, ventilation and/or cooling within or associated with a building, including such incidental or related work as is customarily performed by those in the HVAC trade. This category does not include sheet metal work by itself.
To prequalify for HVAC you must have a Heating, Piping & Cooling Contractor License through the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. 
IRON: STRUCTURAL AND MISCELLANEOUS  Fabrication and/or erection of structural steel and miscellaneous iron used in the repair, renovation and new construction of the structural and miscellaneous steel elements of a building 
LANDSCAPING  Work related to the planning and development of the land for specific use, usually associated with siting a building, or another stated activity such as a recreation area, park or other passive use. The work normally involves the modification of the earth contours; the development of movement pattern such as walks, drives and other paths to achieve a given design; work also includes the selection and placement of plant materials to enhance the site as well as the coordination of other site essentials such as water and power for lighting and work purposes. 
LEAD ABATEMENT  The undertaking of lead abatement projects involving one or more of the following: scraping and/or chemical stripping of lead paint; encapsulation and covering of lead contaminated surfaces; or removal and replacement of windows, woodwork or other contaminated surfaces.
To prequalify for Lead Abatement, you must have a Lead Contractor License through the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health. 
LOCKERS  Work customarily performed by this industry, including the furnishing and installation of lockers. 
MASONRY  Installation, renovation, repair and maintenance of masonry units composed of concrete, stone, brick and the like, including such incidental or related work as is customarily performed by those in the masonry trade. 
MECHANICAL INSULATION  Includes the installation, replacement, repair or alteration of insulation of duct-work systems associated with heating, air conditioning and ventilation. 
METAL SIDING  Work customarily performed by this industry including the supply and installation of metal siding where used as external components of custom designed buildings. This does not apply to pre-engineered buildings where the metal siding is a building component. 
PAINTING  Application of paint to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and preparation of such surfaces for the purpose of receiving a finish coat of paint, including such incidental or related work as is customarily performed by those in the painting trades. 
PLUMBING  Installation, repair and maintenance of pipes, fixtures and other apparatus in buildings for bringing in and distributing the water supply and removing liquid and water-borne waste, including such incidentals or related work as is customarily performed by those in the plumbing trade.
To prequalify for Plumbing you must have a Plumbing Contractor License through the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. 
ROOFING  The installation of various types of roofing materials including shingles, slate, rubber, PVC and related flashing and drainage systems. 
SCAFFOLDING  The fabrication and erection or installation of a temporary framework used to support people and material in the construction, renovation or repair of buildings and other large structures. 
SEWER AND WATER LINES  The construction, rehabilitation and/or reconstruction of waterlines, sewer lines and ancillary works, including well drilling. 
SHEET METAL WORK  Includes the installation, erection, replacement, repair or alteration of duct-work systems, both ferrous and nonferrous and includes but is not limited to warm and cool air, ventilation, exhaust, pneumatic conveyance and hood exhaust.
To prequalify for Sheet Metal Work you must have a Sheet Metal Work Contractor License through the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. 
SITEWORK  Work customarily performed by this industry, including earthmoving activities, installation of drainage systems, utility systems and horizontal paving work not requiring mortar. 
TELECOMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS  Installation, repair and maintenance of telephone, intercom, television, computer network or related equipment for a major communication system within a building. 
TOILET PARTITIONS, TOILET ACCESSORIES  Work customarily performed by this industry, including the furnishing and installation of toilet partitions and toilet accessories. 
TUNNELING  The construction of micro tunnels for the installation of underground pipelines with an inside diameter equal to or greater than 72 inches using pressurized face or rock excavation methods. 
WATER TREATMENT PLANTS  The construction, rehabilitation and/or reconstruction of sewage treatment plants, water treatment plants and ancillary works.
To prequalify for Water Treatment Plants you must have a Major Contractor Registration through the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. 
WATERPROOFING  Installation, renovation, repair and maintenance of materials required to make foundations, walls and other surfaces of a building dam proof or impervious to water, including such incidental or related work as is customarily performed by those in the waterproofing and dam proofing trades. This category does not include roofing by itself.
